With the summer season options ranging from hiking and mountain biking, to road cycling and white water rafting, potholing and paragliding, there really is something for everyone. If all that sounds far too energetic why not just take in the stunning views of the Giffre Valley whilst sitting back and relaxing on the balcony with a glass of wine and a good book.
For water sport enthusiasts the River Giffre offers an array of exciting activities including the high adrenaline sports of white water rafting and hydrospeed or the more sedate pastimes of kayaking, airboating or canoeing.
The leisure complex at Lac aux Dames also offers a wide range of recreational and sports activities, including fishing and an open-air swimming pool with magnificent panoramic views of the mountains around Samoëns.
If you are keen to try your hand at rock climbing but are worried about the risks, then why not try Via Ferrata. A cross between hiking and climbing, participants are permenantly attached to the mountain via a harness, so falling isn't an option! With the famous Via Ferrata du Mont just a couple of minutes drive from Samoëns the region is a popular destination for those with previous via ferrata experience and also those looking to try something new.
Climbing, caving or canyoning
With the mountains rising on either side of the village, there is no shortage of challenges if you enjoy climbing, caving, or canyoning. The valley has a world-wide reputation for potholing, with Samoëns being home to Gouffre Jean Bernard à Foilly, one of the deepest and most famous potholes in the world.
Parapenting, similar to parachuting from the tops of mountains, originated in this area 20 years ago, and there are lots of schools to help you either learn how to pilot your own parapent or to take a “tandem-flight” for an experience of a lifetime!
Horse riding, quad biking and many other activities are also available in Samoëns and the surrounding area. Visit the Samoëns Tourist Information site www.Samoëns.com to find out more.
