With alpine lakes, fast-flowing mountain streams, and crystal clear rivers, fishing in the Alps has to be on every keen angler’s travel wishlist. Alps fishing is a rewarding way to spend a day in one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes, and is a great activity for discovering lesser known corners of the region. Across the Alps you can expect to fish for a variety of trout, as well as salmon, grayling and char, making for an extraordinary fly-fishing holiday.
Naturally, fishing in the Alps isn’t simply ‘fishing’. This is a unique experience that lures visitors back to the region year after year. There’s simply nowhere better to spend a summer day than on the shore of an alpine lake, with a skyline of snow-capped peaks in the distance. The best time of year for fishing in the Alps is May through to August when rivers are still flowing clear and strong with melt-water. Happily this is also the time of year when visitors can enjoy long, sun-soaked days, and alfresco evenings perfect for a BBQ to enjoy the day’s catch.
From beginners to experts, children to grandparents, fly fishing in the Alps is a fantastic summer activity which is accessible for everyone. There are plenty of fishing guides, schools and shops offering lessons, fishing tours, and rental equipment, tailored to your preferences. A local guide is always a good choice for maximising your time at the water’s edge.

Spullersee near Lech in Austria. This alpine lake encompasses 50 acres and is typically very quiet. It was dammed in the early 20th Century and hosts a good stock of rainbow, lake and brook trout, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed day of fishing in the mountains. A 20-minute hike from the lake is Revensburger Hutte with a beautiful panoramic sun terrace – perfect for a casual lunch and reviving drink.
Perhaps the most iconic lake to fish in the Alps sits directly before the majestic Matterhorn in Zermatt. The private lake at FlyFishZermatt is well-stocked with strong-fighting mountain trout, and there’s simply no better spot to perfect your casting technique. There is a nearby mountain hut, and also an opportunity for private sunrise/sunset tours, for golden hour fishing on your own private lake.
