Saas Fee Luxury Summer Chalets
Rega Pass, Switzerland
High on the Italian/Swiss border, at 1,800m above sea level, remains one of Switzerland's hidden gems. This picturesque Swiss town, still off the main tourist trail, is perfect for seasoned alpine adventurers looking to beat the crowds for a summer chalet holiday in Saas Fee. Most notable about Saas Fee is it's one of the places you can ski all year long on The Fee Glacier. Although, if your skis are packed away for the summer, the hiking and biking trails can elevate you to some of the most spectacular scenery in the Alps. Plus, there's fun for the whole family with Europe's highest railed toboggan run, an Ice Grotto and the town even boasts a surprisingly high population of friendly marmots, who love to be fed!
Still packed with rural charm and some spectacular luxury summer chalets, this car-free resort has found the perfect balance between tourist amenities and retaining elements of its former agricultural past. While many summer chalets are located in the centre of Saas Fee, where there are plenty of restaurants and bars to relax the afternoon away, those who venture just outside the town are met by outstretching wildness in a maze of hiking trails and a variety of cable cars giving access not only to the glacier but to neighbouring villages as well.
Boasting the highest underground train in the world, the Metro Alpin climbs to 3,500 meters to arrive at the top of the Allinhorn glacier. An array of icy pursuits await you at the summit, none more impressive than the world's largest Ice Pavilion which welcomes you to explore the centre of the glacier, complete with its own 2,000-year-old history, avalanche simulation and ice sculpture exhibition. There's also tubing, a ski-doo park, plus a revolving restaurant and coffee bar overlooking the Dom, Täschhorn, Alphubel, Strahlhorn and Allalinhorn Peaks. Heading back into the valley the fun doesn't stop, with a railed toboggan run; the 900 meter ride overlooks stunning scenery and reaches speeds of 40km! For more thrills, there's also a ropes course and the Gorge-Alpine Via Ferrata traversing canyons, caves, waterfalls, and a river.
For the leisure seekers on a summer holiday to Saas Fee, it is the perfect base to explore on foot or using the cable cars. Discover the Gemsweg or Chamois Trail, reaching from the Hannig gondola summit station to the Gletschergrotte as it wraps around Saas Fee. There's also the annual Sass-Fee Culinary Food Festival held on a weekend in September, when Saas Fee proves itself a worthy champion of the title of the culinary capital of the Swiss Alps.
